Air Conditioning Repair: The Greatest Cause

While different variables can factor into air conditioning that requires repair, the most common culprit we see is still a lack of consistent maintenance. We also understand why this is often the case. Our cooling systems are typically tucked away in our homes, and out of sight can frequently mean out of mind. We’re probably aware that the system is still running, but we’re not alert to the issues that may be brewing within it.

If we let the air conditioner remain beyond our thought for too long, it will begin to struggle without periodic attention to the many parts that work to keep us cool.

This includes checking and replacing the air filter at least every 90 days. You’d be amazed by what a clogged and dirty filter can do to a system. Not replacing a filter that may cost between $10 and $20 can result in air conditioning repairs that run into the hundreds and even the thousands.

Air Conditioning Repair: Why Age Is a Problem

Another common factor we notice is failure in an aging system. If your air conditioner is more than 15 years old, it’s around the time when a system replacement may serve you much better in performance and longer-term cost.

Today’s air conditioners are more efficient than those made 15+ years ago. They can often achieve the indoor temps you desire with less energy draw from the system.

On top of that, many air conditioners made before 2010 used R-22 refrigerant, which was discontinued as an environmental hazard. If you have a pre-2010 air conditioner with a refrigerant leak that needs repair, acquiring R-22 is very difficult, and when it can be located, it’s expensive. We’ve seen it go for as much as $150 per pound.

Many of today’s air conditioners also have much better warranties than past units did. Older models typically had just a one-year warranty. At best, some may have had five-year coverage. Current air conditioners often come with a warranty of 5 to 10 years for even greater security of ownership.
